The Hemisfere Project

Mission Statement

Responsibility is the price of freedom.

Freedom to explore is a privilege. We are privileged with mobility and infused with life - all of which are made available through our planet. Although one lifetime is not enough to navigate our Earth, it may be enough time to save it from the increasing affects of climate change. Thus arose this small but daring shop named "Hemisfere".

I recycle denim from thrift shops and donation centers to wash, hand-paint and sell on Etsy. 10% of all proceeds are donated to charities including:
The Green Peace Fund
Earth Justice
Rainforest Alliance
Conservation International

How can you help?

  • THRIFT CLOTHES instead of buying them! Vintage and one-of-a-kind finds are often more rewarding (and cheaper) than buying new clothes. This also prevents them from having to be thrown out!
  • DONATE OLD CLOTHES to places like Plato's Closet, or local thrift stores! Don't throw them out. DSW also takes old shoe donations.

Where are the jeans from?

Hemisfere Shop
The high quality upcycled denim I use comes from people in my community for donations of old jeans that no longer fit them, or I go to our local thrift store, In Full Swing, to purchase them. The proceeds from purchases go to aid women suffering from domestic abuse. Check out their mission below.

The Statistics

As of 2016, 13 million tons of perfectly wearable clothing are thrown into landfills every year. This makes up 9% of all trash that end up there.

These clothes could easily be recycled with some effort and help from everyone in the community. If every person in the United States donated their clothing instead of throwing it out, we would be relieving 13 million tons out of 230 million tons.

The Process

Before I paint each pair of jeans, I come up with a process, and an idea for the design I want to create.
I start by collecting a few pairs of jeans every month, washing them, and ironing them. Once they are all prepared, I sketch out my designs on them using the White Uni-Ball Gel Pen. It works so well for sketching on surfaces that aren't smooth like paper.

When coming up with my designs, I think from two perspectives.
1.) The Fine Art Perspective - what could I paint to symbolize something important to me, what colors would best convey it, and how detailed should it be.

2.) The Graphic Design Perspective - Where should I place it, what embellishments can I make, and what would be most aesthetically pleasing on an article of clothing.

When I first started out, I went the classic route of getting inspiration from master paintings and figuring out aesthetic placements for them. As I gained experience, I started experimenting with my own designs and ideas.

Each piece takes me 7-10 hours to finish, from the brainstorming process to the finished photography phase. I hope to create as many pieces as I can this summer, and hopefully make Hemisfere into a big project.
